Buying guide: Tequila
Tequila is the largest part of our catalog: 1,119 products from 192 brands, from unaged blanco to long-aged extra añejo and filtered cristalino. Every bottle must come from the protected denomination-of-origin territory and a producer certified by the Consejo Regulador del Tequila (CRT), which is why tequila is also the category where origin is easiest to prove.
Tequila versus tequila 100% de agave
Mexico's tequila standard, NOM-006-SCFI-2012, recognises two categories. Tequila 100% de agave is made only from Agave tequilana Weber blue variety sugars and must be bottled by the producer inside the denomination-of-origin territory. Tequila (often called “mixto”) must contain at least 51% agave sugars; it is the only category that may be shipped in bulk and bottled abroad under a registered agreement. If you are comparing quotations, make sure both offers refer to the same category — the label must say which one it is.
Classes and what they mean for your range
- Blanco / Plata (315 in our catalog) — unaged or rested briefly; the core of cocktail and on-trade programmes.
- Reposado (258) — aged at least two months in oak; a versatile retail staple.
- Añejo (216) — at least one year in oak containers of up to 600 litres.
- Extra Añejo (121) — at least three years in oak; usually premium packaging and limited lots.
- Cristalino (35) — an aged tequila filtered to remove colour. It is a market term rather than a separate legal class, so confirm which class appears on the label.
- Joven / Oro (18) — blanco blended with aged tequila or permitted colouring and flavouring.
Producer, NOM and certification checks
Every authentic tequila label carries a NOM number that identifies the certified producer. One distillery can make many brands, and one brand can be registered at more than one NOM, so the NOM on the bottle you are quoted matters more than the brand name. The CRT register included in our research lists 2,775 brand registrations across 203 NOM numbers, 91% of them at Jalisco addresses. Registration proves certification, not that a brand is currently exported or available.
Each export lot is accompanied by a CRT-issued certificate of authenticity for export. We ask producers for it as part of the documentation package rather than treating it as optional.
Bottle size, strength and labelling for your market
Tequila is bottled between 35% and 55% alcohol by volume. Only 66 of the 1,119 tequila listings published a bottle size, so format is something we confirm for every request. Standard sizes differ by market — 750 ml is common in the United States, 700 ml in the European Union and the United Kingdom, and 1 litre in travel retail — and destination labelling rules (importer statement, allergen and health warnings, label approval) vary. Read our export documentation overview for authoritative links by destination.
Sets, gift packs and allocated releases
157 tequila listings are sets, bundles or gift packs. They are flagged “verify each component” because the contents can change between seasons and may mix products. Limited editions and older extra añejos are often allocated by producers; we will tell you plainly when a product cannot be confirmed.
