Beyond tequila and mezcal, Mexico produces a family of regional spirits that importers and bar programmes increasingly ask for. This category groups 156 products from 36 brands: 114 destilados de agave, 19 raicillas, 14 sotols, 2 bacanoras and 7 other agave spirits, from at least 13 production regions.
Destilado de agave: when a spirit is not labelled mezcal
“Destilado de agave” is used for agave spirits made outside the mezcal or tequila certification systems — because the producer works outside a denomination-of-origin territory, uses species or methods the standard does not cover, or chooses not to certify. Many are made with the same traditional methods as artisanal mezcal. For buyers, the key point is legal naming: a destilado de agave cannot be sold as mezcal, and your importer will need to classify and label it correctly for the destination market.
Raicilla, sotol and bacanora
- Raicilla — an agave spirit from western Jalisco. Its denomination of origin, published in Mexico's Diario Oficial on 28 June 2019, covers 16 Jalisco municipalities and Bahía de Banderas in Nayarit. Some products sold as raicilla predate or sit outside certification, so we confirm the label wording.
- Sotol — distilled from Dasylirion (desert spoon), a plant that is related to but not an agave. It is associated with Chihuahua, Coahuila and Durango; our listings with a region name Chihuahua (7) and Durango (8).
- Bacanora — an agave spirit from Sonora with its own denomination of origin.
Regional diversity in our listings
Where the source named a region, products come from Oaxaca (41), Jalisco (20), Guerrero (13), Puebla (11), Michoacán (8), San Luis Potosí (7) and others. Most listings come from an importer's Mexico catalog (125). None of these listings published a bottle size or ABV, so both are confirmed on request.
