Buying guide: Liqueurs & Aperitifs

Mexican liqueurs give bars and retailers flavours that are hard to find elsewhere. Our catalog lists 26 liqueurs and aperitifs from 15 brands, including coffee and café de olla liqueurs, cacao and chile liqueurs from Oaxaca, Hidalgo amaros and fernet, a bacanora liqueur and rompope.

Flavour families in the catalog

  • Coffee — from widely distributed brands to small-batch café de olla liqueurs made with Mexican coffee and spices.
  • Cacao and chocolate — Oaxacan cacao liqueurs and ponche de chocolate styles.
  • Chile — pasilla and other chile liqueurs, useful for cocktail programmes.
  • Amaro, bitter and aperitivo — Mexican interpretations using local botanicals.
  • Cream and egg liqueurs — rompope, a traditional Mexican eggnog-style liqueur, which needs particular attention to shelf life and labelling of dairy and egg allergens.

Base spirit and legal naming

Some liqueurs are built on tequila, mezcal or other protected spirits, and Mexico regulates how those names may appear: a liqueur “with tequila” is not tequila. Our research workbook includes 283 registrations of tequila-based liqueurs, creams, cocktails and prepared drinks, which shows how common the category is. We confirm the base spirit and the exact sales denomination on the label so your importer can classify the product correctly.

Practical considerations

None of these listings published an ABV, and only 3 published a size. Sugar content, colourings and allergens must be declared differently from market to market. Ask for a full ingredient list and technical sheet with your quotation — we request them from the producer as standard.
