Buying guide: Wine, Cider & Fermented Specialties

Mexican wine has moved from curiosity to serious wine-list category, and our catalog lists 263 wines — red, white, rosé and sparkling — by producer and vintage, alongside 11 fermented specialties such as cider, mead, sake, pulque and tepache. Many of the wineries listed, including Monte Xanic, L.A. Cetto, Santo Tomás and Vena Cava, are based in Baja California's wine valleys.

Buying by producer and vintage

Every wine listing names its producer and, where published, its vintage (from 2012 to 2025 in our data). Production runs at many Mexican wineries are small, so a listed vintage may already have been fully allocated or replaced by the next release. We confirm the current vintage, remaining quantity and any change in blend before quoting, and we never substitute a vintage without your written agreement.

Shipping wine safely

  • Heat is the main risk in transit. For summer departures or long routes, ask us to price a refrigerated container or insulated liners alongside a standard option.
  • Six-bottle cases are common for premium wines; confirm case size, dimensions and whether bottles travel upright or on their side.
  • Sparkling wines and natural-cork closures need careful palletisation and handling instructions.

Labelling and documentation

Importing countries regulate wine labels closely — alcohol statement, allergens such as sulphites, importer details and, in some markets, label pre-approval. Wine also falls under the alcohol sectors of Mexico's export register and requires a certificate of origin to claim preferential tariff treatment where an agreement applies. Our Mexican wine guide covers these steps in more detail.

Fermented specialties

Pulque, tepache, cider, mead and Mexican-made sake are distinctive additions for specialist retailers and restaurants. Shelf life and storage temperature vary widely — fresh pulque and live ferments behave very differently from pasteurised, canned versions — so we confirm the exact product type and stability before quoting.
